I recently had a roof inspector who offered to come by and look at the roof on a duplex (rental) that'd been pounded by hail around 6-9 months ago. He marked out a few large squares on the roof and marked in chalk all the spots hail damage had occurred which were about the size of a quarter each.

From what I understand, I sign an agreement to use them as the GC and they work with insurance to replace the roof. It's already 10-15 years old and the fiberglass is very visible on many of the shingles so I've been looking at redoing it anyways. I have a 1k deductible so I'm not worried about that cost.

Any reccomendations or questions to ask when I meet him tomorrow and we call my insurance?

Any experience with roof inspectors working with insurance for a claim and roof replacement?

Personally, I would avoid any roofer that uses insurance claims as their sales pitch. Storm chasers have always charged too much and done crappy work, in my experience. Filing a claim isn’t rocket science so that’s not a reason to use them. With my current insurance rates I wouldn’t dream of filing a claim on a roof that was already near the end of its life, but 15 years isn’t that old so maybe it’s worth it to you. Don’t be surprised if your insurance company drops you or raises your premium by a couple grand a year.

If you really want the roof redone, call another local roofer and get a quote, look at the price, but also look at the materials and methods they use. You’ll almost definitely get a better product.
