Russia and Iran sign rail deal to finance and build an Iranian railway line as part of a corridor intended to rival the Suez Canal as a major global trade route. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi oversaw the deal signing via video-link.

It is not a rival to the Suez Canal. Suez canal connects the East to West. The proposed rail does not connect Russia to Iran or Iran to India directly. It has to go through Kazakistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to Iran and through Pakistan to India. So it is not much useful to India. It cannot be used for trade with the West and Suez Canal is the only option.
