Russia is putting the final touches to the Nord Stream pipeline, which will carry natural gas to Europe.

A quarter of the continent’s gas is already supplied by Russia – but with the opening of this new route in the coming weeks, the country’s powerful state-owned Gazprom company hopes to increase exports further.

Barnaby Phillips reports from Vyborg, in north-west Russia.

The weather is grim here on the baltic coast but work does not stop russia is putting the final touches to an ambitious project to take its gas directly to Europe’s richest markets the Nord Stream pipeline begins here near the port of Freiburg and then runs under the Baltic through Russian Finnish

Swedish Danish and finally German waters ending in Greifswald from where gas will be distributed across the continent in Europe there’s a lot of talk about diversifying energy sources and relying less on Russia but the Russians hope that the gas that comes through this plant will soon be

Supplying more than 25 million homes in Western Europe that’s called cosmos tour as far as I know Europe buys gas not only from Russia but from all over the world I don’t see anything wrong with this situation it’s an oval market it’s possible to buy from different sources

This man has written a book about how Russia has used gas as a weapon to exert power abroad but he believes those days are over despite Nord Stream I don’t think that that Russian government and Gazprom is willing to to increase the dependence now they want to maintain their current

Status for years and actually I don’t feel that that’s that’s very scary for Europe but by laying the pipe along the sea Russia has bypassed Ukraine this means less revenue and transit fees for Ukraine and a growing worry that with much of Western Europe’s gas going

Across the Baltic it will be left more exposed to Russian bullying Russia’s plans don’t end here it’s pushing ahead with a sister pipeline in the south Russia is working hard to tighten its grip on Europe’s gas market Barnaby Philips al-jazeera in north western Russia
