Hey all. My wife and I recently bought a late model Acura MDX, which we try to take very good care of.

Today we were at breakfast and I saw from the restaurant that an elderly couple parked very close to our passenger side and, when they left before us, struggled to get into their cars because they couldn’t get the doors open.

We left the restaurant about 10 minutes later and I noticed some definite dings in the rear passenger side panel that weren’t there before. I did not get their license plate number.

We have comprehensive coverage through Progressive with a $1,000 deductible.

I plan to get a quote for the repair, but I have a few questions:

    1. Assuming the repair is more than $1,000, at what point does it make sense to file a claim for a door ding? I’m not sure if my insurance rate would increase significantly. If the cost of the repair is only a little more than the deductible, I assume it makes no sense to file a claim.

    2. If I contact my insurance now to get the claim started, but the total cost comes out within my deductible or just over and I pay it all out of pocket, will it still count as a claim?

    3. Will this show up as an “accident” on the car’s report?

Any time you contact your insurance, whether you move forward with the claim or not, it’s stored on your record (CLUE report), and can increase premiums at renewal. I would see what the cost is to repair before you call your insurance company.

    2. Door dings are a tough one. In my state they are usually classified as collision claims, not comprehensive, because they involve contact with another vehicle. You didn’t mention what state you live in and some states allow companies to increase your rate for any claim filed on your policy regardless of fault. Obviously, if the damage is less than your deductible you should not file a claim. If your insurance company pays anything for the repair it will go on the car’s record.
