In the process of purchasing my first car (m23). For background, I live with my parents but I’ll be the only one driving the car. I have been shoppingng for auto insurance over the past couple days as a part of the car purchase process. Multiple insurance companies have now asked for my family members license numbers as apart of the process. My parents claim this isn’t normal procedure when getting a quote. Wanted to see if other people have encountered this and if it is normal per the auto insurance industry.

    1. Your parents are wrong, and there are many states where insurance companies are required by law to ask for this information. If you live with your parent, then this is a usual and customary question.

Its industry standard. All household members of driving she must be disclosed and rated, excluded where state law allows or listed but not rated due to having their own insurance.

100% normal, it’s part of the contract and can almost guarantee that it’s on your parents contract.

Your parents are wrong. This is very standard in getting insurance. Your carrier wants to know all of the drivers in your household. You say they won’t be driving your car, but they will have regular access to your car.

    5. It’s normal across the industry. Your family members are a risk according to your insurance company and they want to provide a quote that would be appropriate for 3 licensed drives in one household. You can either have them excluded from the policy and they will never be covered for an accident if they drive your car or you can include them and pay the higher premiums. I would only recommend excluding them from your policy if they will never drive your vehicle.

If you share the household, it may be cheaper for you to be on your parent’s insurance and pay your portion of the premiums

    7. Yes, auto insurance companies need to know who all has access to the vehicles in your possession!
