I'm a PA resident, but currently going to college in IN. For background, my parent has insurance for her car, but since I would not driving at college, she took me off her insurance. This spring, I got a car, and the plan is to take it with me to college. However, since they bought it in PA while I was away at school, they out the title under my brother's name, with the intention of transferring it to me.

Yesterday, we got an insurance for me; however today, they informed us that I cannot drive it to Indiana. If I do, they would essentially not cover me, and they said I should instead register my car in Indiana, and get insurance in Indiana.

According to the research I did, it is ok for students to study out of state and retain their home state registration and insurance, given that they are insured under their parents. However, if the situation is that the student isn't insured under their parents, it's a little unclear what they can do.

I guess the advice I'm seeking is what I can legally do and what I should do.

    1. Is there any way for me to have my car registered and insured in PA while going to school in IN?
    2. How would I be able to register and insure my car in IN? I'm currently in PA and so is the car.

In addition, there is a somewhat of a time crunch, as I need to return to school in the first week of June for a position.

    I really appreciate any help!

    1. If the car is titled to you or your brother, then you (or your brother) would need your own insurance, not your parents. Once the car is in your name, registered and titled in PA, then ask the agent.about insurance.

Why bother to title in your brother’s name just to transfer to you?? Why add the extra step, cost and inconvenience?
