We needed a mom vehicle (expecting any day now) so we bought a 2016 Subaru crosstrek from a family friend in New Jersey that fixes broken cars. We were skeptical but it was rebuilt, repainted, and inspected. After he showed the vehicle passed the NJ inspection we felt comfortable with the purchase. Here’s the issue: We live in New York. After bringing the vehicle here we find out that we cannot insure the vehicle because the title still has a “Salvage” status, even though it’s good as new, and considered roadworthy in New Jersey. We could take it to get inspected but they’re going to send us to NYS Salvage Examination Program that basically means they check every single part on the car and we have to show purchase receipts on all the parts and that the work was performed by NYS certified garage. The program isn’t to determine it’s safe to drive it’s to prove the car was not stolen…As of now the vehicle is not legally considered rebuilt. So we can’t insure it, register it, or inspect it in New York. Any advice on solutions or ways around this?

Can the person you bought it from go through the process in NJ to get a negotiable title? The process in NJ is very similar to NY.

There is no way around it, DMV processes exist for a reason. Anybody that suggests ways around it would just be listing ways to commit fraud.
