My son hit the curb while driving and it caused tire misalignment and steering problems amounting to $4k. Would this be covered by auto insurance. I’d call them myself but I don’t want this going down on my permanent record if it’s not.

Insurance does cover stupid (not to be harsh), this would be a collision claim.
Yes, but on this particular claim only if you have collision coverage, and you’ll need to absorb your deductible. If you have a high deductible and any sort of recent claims history, don’t be surprised if you end up paying over $4K between your deductible and potential premium increase over the next couple of years. If you have an agent or broker, you might want to give them a call with a “hypothetical” situation and get their two cents.
