I am in a bit of a predicament. I (22) am living with my mother, and am looking to get a job. In order to get the job I want, I need to get a license. My mother is concerned that Progressive will raise her rates due to my getting a license. Is this true? Can anything be done? We can’t afford any additional cost, as we are currently on the verge of being homeless as it is.

Will my mother’s rates go up if I get a license?

    1. Yes, if you live with your mother and you become newly licensed, your mother’s rates will increase and likely significantly (unless she already has a crappy driving record and is paying super high rates now). If you NEVER need to drive any of the cars on her policy, and you live in a state that allows policyholders to exclude drivers from their policy (some do, some don’t), then you may be able to be explicitly excluded from coverage. Just be careful if you do that – you cannot get behind the wheel of her covered vehicles for any reason and have even a penny’s worth of coverage if you’re an excluded driver. You can’t shift cars around in the driveway, pull into or out of the garage, run down to the corner store, etc.
