I got into a car accident on 4/22. The state is Missouri. I had a green light, as I crossed the intersection I was hit by another driver who ran the red light. I immediately called the police, the other driver mentioned the sun was in her eyes and that the light changed fast. I was nearly through the intersection when she hit my rear drivers side door. A police report was filed. I was able to get policy details from the other driver and open a claim with State Farm. On the paperwork supplied to me in regard to the other drivers insurance, it lists effective policy dates at 5/6/24 – 5/6/25 however in talking to the claim adjuster they’re now saying the policy might not be active and needs to go through underwriting (3 weeks after the policy was opened).

My question is, if someone opened a policy would it not be effective on the day the policy was opened and payment was made. My next question is, shouldn’t underwriting typically happen shortly after the policy is opened? I was able to open a claim under my insurance although State Farm has yet to contact the other driver to collect her statement almost a week later. I completely understand things might be backed up with the holiday but can’t help but feel like something isn’t adding up.

Taking into account my minimal knowledge of insurance… any insight, advice, or feedback is appreciated.
