Hi, a question about combining renters insurance with auto insurance (in the US), as I'm looking for auto insurance after years of living in the city without a car, and I've heard that one can often get discounts by buying multiple policies through the same insurer.

The sticking point for me is that I had a claim on my renters insurance last year (there was a small fire in the apartment above, causing some damage to my unit). I worry that if I tell a potential insurer about that (when applying for a renter's/auto combo), they'd label me as a bad egg and raise the premiums for both policies. Have you heard of anything like that happening, or do insurers keep their information more compartmentalized?

Can a claim on renters insurance increase auto premiums?
