In considering buying a home in California, I found out that insurers have pulled back from writing new policies in some areas (even pretty normal non-rural populated places). How are you supposed to find this out before considering where to buy a house? Are there maps they're publishing, or do you have to ask an insurance agent on a property-by-property basis? Neighborhood?

How are you supposed to find out where insurers are no longer covering properties for fire?

You are thinking very smart about this. So many insurers are not writing in California at all(thank your insurance commissioner for not allowing insurance companies to take rate because of wildfires and other disasters, so they are bleeding money). Your department of insurance seems to have some resources online at a glance. The second link is an interactive one that asks what kind of policy you want and the zip code. Hopefully, the DOI is up to date on who is writing what. https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/03-res/res-co-contact.cfm
