This incident was a month ago. I was borrowing my friends car to haul a trailer. As I was on the interstate, the line of cars in front of me came to a stop. Misjudging the distance between me and the car in front, I didn’t have enough space. I tried to get over but the trailer caught the side of the car. The trailer is fucked, no damage to my friends car and just some scrapes down the side of their car. Scrapes might be an understatement but like it wasn’t like completely torn off panels. Definitely in need of repair, but not falling off type of deal.

Not trying to downplay how I fucked up here just trying to put into scope the level of damages.

Now should I report this to my insurance? Or my friends? Initially I was told no but I’m ngl this event haunts me. We tried to call my friends insurance initially and they just gave us this weird walk around about filing saying I don’t think you need to but it felt weird the way they were talking. Neither her nor I have been contacted since about this incident.

This is my first accident at all and initially I was a mess because of it. Since it was my fault and not my car. I’d thought I had come to terms with it but now I feel this pit in my stomach like I should’ve or maybe to much time has passed now.

Any advice would be appreciated here.

    1. Generally, liability coverage extends to a trailer being pulled.

It will go through friend’s insurance since it was their vehicle. Your insurance shouldn’t get involved short of some uncommon stuff you haven’t mentioned yet so they won’t be a concern for you

Have friend call back and insist on opening a claim with their insurance to pay for the other vehicle’s damage and cooperate with their questions/paperwork/etc

      Your friend’s car.

      Covered by his insurance.

      You drove with his permission.

You are covered by his policy by definition.

You sit him down and have him report this to his insurance. You got the run around because he is the Named Insured and he has to do it. Tell him that an insurance expert says if he conceals the accident he will lose his insurance.

The “scratches” on the other car are likely to cost thousands of dollars.
