My name is Leon and I am the primary insurance holder on an active policy with Progressive. The vehicle I have insured is a 2015 Kia Soul and my roommate is added on the policy as an additional driver.

Recently, I sold this Kia directly to my roommate since I no longer drive it and the title was transferred to him. He is now the sole registered owner of the Kia.

I called Progressive and asked them to transfer ownership of the policy to my roommate, have me as an excluded driver, and have him the official policyholder. They said they couldn’t do that and he’d have to file his own quote to get insurance under his name directly. Ok, fine. I’ll do that.

The issue is Progressive, along with many other insurers, no longer insure Kias due to high theft rates. I asked what possible way there was to remedy this and the agent was clueless on advice to give me. He suggested just going with someone else. I’ve tried other insurance companies that will insure it, but they want double, almost triple, of what I am paying now due to theft rates.

My question is…..can I leave this policy as-is with me as the policy holder even though the car is no longer officially mine? My concern is, what happens if my roommate gets in a wreck and our state minimum doesn’t cover all the damages? Am I going to be sued since I’m the policy holder, or my roommate because he’s the owner of that car now? It’s a very confusing situation and need help to avoid a financial disaster if an accident occurs.

Unable to get proper insurance for Kia vehicle. Question about liability.
