mine is going up nearly 50% this year. what are my options? threaten to cancel? switch around? adjust the policy (if so, what should i keep as a bare minimum so i can get rid of the 'unneeded' coverages)

The only thing you can do is shop around.
Review your coverages, make sure they are as needed and get quotes.
