We recently filed a claim with our new insurance company. Policy has been set up for about a month and premium is paid in full.
They asked for the declaration page from my last insurance provider to “clear coverage” and I don’t know why that is needed when I have an existing paid policy for them. Why is it relevant now? Just making sure it’s normal.

    1. Presuming this is auto insurance, there’s usually a question on the application you complete when signing up with a carrier to the effect of “Have you had continuous insurance for the last X months?” Answering no to that question indicates a lapse in coverage, which companies see as a higher risk, and there’s usually a surcharge for that. Answering yes to that question could prompt them to ask for proof of prior insurance.

      It’s not unusual.

With the claim filed so soon after the new policy, they may want the previous one to confirm when it ended.

They are likely trying to make sure the damage occurred when their policy was active and not the previous insurance policy and to confirm if there may have been an overlap of coverage.

Anytime you file a claim with 30 days of a new policy it is seen as a possible suspicious claim that might have been for preexisting damage so they are just doing their due diligence.

If they are asking for it, you need to send it to them. If you do not, you are likely to find your claim denied due to your failure to cooperate, which you are required to do as outlined in your policy.
