• $5,000 Property Damage Coverage
    • $15K Per Person/$30K Per Accident Coverage
    • No Deductible
    • No Comprehensive
    • Medical Payments Not Included

I know this is BAD but for $162.97/month (I am low income) and after an uninsured accident at my fault a year ago (I learned my lesson) I think it's better than nothing. I honestly am uncertain of how to feel about this.

P.S. the insurance company is Root Insurance and I'm in California.

EDIT: I'm inquiring about higher Coverage and switching policies as soon as possible. Thanks for the help, y'all! As for the more judgmental sort, sorry for being poor <shrug>

How bad is this Car Insurance coverage?

Your limits are too low! In CA, of all places! Useless if you caused a serious accident. Raise to 250/500 or 500 CSL. Increase Property to 250 (100 min.) Also, look into an Umbrella Policy with UMBI; 1 or 2M. Year, Make, Model? Shop around. Get 3-5 quotes. 10 if you really have time to.

    2. $5,000 does not cover much for damages to others. If you are at fault at hit a Tesla you are looking at $40,000 to $50,000. Some pickups now are over $100,000 new.

Medical payments are also very expensive. Some areas an ambulance could be $5,000 or more just to get you to a hospital.

Agreed with the others, try to raise your PD limits if you’re able. 5k ridiculously low, although it’s the legal minimum in your state, it’s not gonna cover much.

    4. I’m going to be real with you: if that’s the best coverage you can afford, you can’t afford to drive. One minor accident will max out your policy and then you’re looking at being personally sued for damages.

    5. Increasing your liability limits is usually very cheap. Have an agent run quotes for you (it’s free to do so). You might find that for the cost of one fast food meal per month, you can purchase coverage that would save you from having to file bankruptcy if you cause an accident.

With those limits, if you so much as tap another car, you’re in trouble.

    6. I would definitely up the property damage coverage at the least, but this is bad OP

Id highly recommend looking at your budget to see if there’s anything you can move around

How many cars on the road that you might rear-end do you think are only worth $5000?

    8. The most consistent insurance company for competitive rates in CA I’ve seen is Geico. Have you tried quoting with them? Since you are low income, the state’s [low cost auto insurance program](https://mylowcostauto.com) may be cheaper if you are unable to increase your limits.

Where in CA are you and for what car is this policy covering? As others have said, these limits are very low, and likely will screw you financially if you are held liable for an accident. You may want to consider public transit or Uber, Lyft, etc., but I understand CA is car dependent in many areas.

$5000 property damage is really bad, if you cause a crash at pretty much any speed you’ll exceed that and get debt collectors/sued/garnished.

BI coverage isn’t high enough either, but if you had to pick one on a tight budget you should probably get the PD up to at least like ~30-50k.

not to mention being out the price of your own car if you’re at-fault or the at-fault is also un/underinsured. if your car is financed, you’re required to carry collision/comp with usually a maximum allowable deductible. if you don’t carry that coverage, the bank is allowed to buy their own at a massive upcharge and send you the bill.

You see how much it costs to raise your liability limits. It’s probably only a few dollars.

Yeah, that’s pretty crappy coverage. So, what’s in your history that is making crappy coverage so expensive?

So I would recommend at a minimum raising property damage, you will find that it’s not that expensive to do it. Yes your bodily injury is bad, but if it’s too much to raise that, look at raising just your pd.

denting someone’s bumper will exceed $5K, you are flirting with disaster, friend.

    14. It’s really not that bad as long as you don’t cause any at fault accidents. The only thing I’m worried about is lack of medical payments but you can always sue the other party in this case. Is there any collision coverage? Meaning you crash your own car or someone hits and runs you? That’s important.
