In a recorded conversation over the phone when I rang my insurance company after a pipe had burst in my bathroom vanity, the representative gave us a list of things that would be covered under building and what would be covered under content. He stated that the bathroom vanity would be covered under content, together with a bunch of other items that were damaged. So we made the decision to go ahead and pay the excess for the content part of the policy only since that was going to cover the most important and expensive things to us, including the vanity. Later that day when we spoke to a professional who came out to inspect in person, he proceeds to tell us that we were given the wrong information and that the vanity falls under building.

Does the insurance company have to honour that bathroom vanity liability for us since that’s the information we were originally given, or are they able to refuse to cover the vanity since the worker gave us the wrong information over the phone? If that’s the case, do we have grounds to take this matter further?
