Hi, I have a question I was hoping someone here would be able to answer since I can't find the answer anywhere. I have 7 years time as a reservist but I switched to active duty. Say my 20 years total time comes up but I still have 7 to go for the active duty retirement and for whatever reason I decide not to keep going. Would I be able to collect my reserve retirement without switching back into the reserves or would I need to switch back and get a billet and then retire? Or would I be able to switch into the IRR and then retire from there?

Reserve retirement off active duty possible?

    1. You would have to switch back to the reserves and then retire from there. You cannot retire directly from active duty. You could do a one year reserve contract to retire. Of course you then have to wait to draw your pension.

Personally I think you would really need to factor in how much you don’t want to finish out your time on active duty. Will probably be well worth it to get your pension immediately and have tricare forever as well. If you haven’t yet, you can calculate your reserve time together added to your active duty time so you know exactly how much time you need to serve to reach 20 years AFS (active federal service).
