What can I do about being charged an insane amount of money just for an ultrasound?

(The ultrasound was to ensure my IUD is placed correctly after some pain issues)

Okay so, firstly before I even got it done I did a little research and was told by people here that ultrasounds in general don’t even cost much, like $100 or less. That would’ve been fine.

I even used my insurance search tool and searched for the specific service at the specific location and it showed my TOTAL would be $94 (as in billed $94 and I’d pay the full $94 since my $4k deductible has not been met). That matched about the cost I’d been told by asking around. So all good, right? $94 is doable

…The problem started when I went in and they handed me a sheet before the procedure “$229 is your estimated fee”—WHAT??? I tried not to freak out and thought, “no matter the cost I’m getting this done, I can sort out the billing issues later…”

That wasn’t the worst of it.

Later when I check my Aetna app apparently now the total is $229 x 2 for a total of $458. Now I was freaking out. I called the office and they said the doctor also ordered a “transvaginal” ultrasound as well. I thought it was included in the $229 because it said nothing of TWO procedures on that paper, it was just the one. Nope they just tacked that on without telling me. I mean they told me they were going to do it literally RIGHT before they stuck it inside me (I literally thought they were asking if it was okay for COMFORT reasons obviously because they were literally about to go inside me) so I was like oh yeah sure it’s fine. It should’ve been on the estimated cost!!! Not a LAST minute add-on service costing me a whole ‘nother $229!!! That was very deceiving!!!

I went from thinking I was gonna pay $94 to now owing $458. This is insanity. My insurance and the doctor’s office both aren’t being cooperative about this, I keep hearing “we’ll call you back when we get it sorted out” well they never called back and my bill is in the mail as of yesterday and due in 2 weeks.

Is there ANYTHING I can do about this sh*tty / deceitful situation???
