This is my first time posting so bear with me.

I got into an accident. The person rear ended me and I asked him if he had insurance. At first he said yes and then later on he switched it to, "I can pay you for the damages." I told him he could pay me 500 and he said that was too much and brought it down to 300. I ended up taking the money.

Here's where I messed up, aside from his license plate, I have no information on this guy.

Now to the question, what are my next best steps and what can I do to handle such a situation better next time?

Took money from the person that hit me.

    1. This is almost never a good move. Next time don’t do it.

But in your case the deal is done, right? He gave you 300 dollars and you both drove away.

Take insurance, it’s how you settle all matters. If they refuse take a photo of their plate and VIN tag on windshield than you call the police. Atleast if they drive off you have two points to go off of.

Why would you need his info? You accepted $300 in exchange for whatever damage he might have done. I believe you knew exactly what you were doing.
