I’m new to auto insurance (first car). My first policy expires in about a few weeks and I’ve been researching other companies because I’m moving states. I got overwhelmed because I didn’t understand what coverage I needed. So I decided to visit an independent agent.

I LOVED the agent. She was incredibly nice, guided me through everything and I left with a clear understanding of what I was getting. I told her I wanted to review everything before I made a commitment but between you and me it’s because I felt the quote was higher than I expected, it was around $2,100. I left and went home afterwards.

When I got home I decided to get a quote online from the same insurance company she quoted me for with exactly the same coverage and I got a quote around $1,050. THAT’s $1,000 cheaper. I don’t know about you but I don’t have $1K to be throwing around like that. I feel bad because of how kind and helpful she was.

Here’s my dilemma. I got all the information, orientation and guidance from the independent agent, they did all the work for me. But it’s $1K more than just getting the policy myself online. What should I do? Is it even legal? In terms of receiving a service I didn’t end up paying for. It feels unethical.

Is it alright to get a new policy by your self after receiving information and quote from independent agent?

I’m an independent agent and if I had a client in this situation I would want the heads up so I had a chance to review and confirm they’re similar – if it is legitimately the same coverage for that big of a price difference I would tell them to leave all day but often times the online quotes get shifted after you bind because they may not have run the reports or something similar. I would talk it through with her and if you end up going the online route leave her a great review for her knowledge (that’s greatly appreciated!!).
