I’ve had a storage unit since September of 2022. I’ve paid $158 a month. That included insurance. I receive a call at the end of April that there was a fire that affected several units including mine. Everything was a loss. Everything. They had me fill out the paperwork for the insurance claim which totaled 15,700$. Last week I received a phone call from the storage facility saying that I was a month behind in paying and they won’t be giving me my insurance claim. At the end of the conversation she offered $500 for pain and suffering! I’m devastated and angry. I know I was behind but that was something that had happened 3 times since I’ve had it and they never mentioned this being a potential issue. They also didn’t say a word about it when they had me come in to fill out the claim. Is there anything I can do in this situation? Please help. I’m desperate. I lost everything.

    1. Pull the actual paperwork for what you were paying for

Was it *actually* insurance? Or was it creatively worded like “damage waiver” or “loss reimbursement” or “property protection” or something like that?

If it was actually insurance-insurance, you have many more protections than if it’s some proprietary product they tacked onto your rent re: nonpayment rules, cancellation timelines, etc

If it doesn’t actually call itself insurance, you are bound by whatever strict rules they put on. it’s not an insurance product
