This is for the US, in case it’s relevant.

We (married couple) are trying to help a friend out a bit who’s struggling to get his own car but since this is LA, can barely get to this job without one.

We have a second car we don’t use that much, so I was happy to borrow it out once in a while.

He now started to use it very frequently, which I do t mind all that much, but it took us a long time to get our car insurance premiums down to an acceptable amount and I am extremely worried about having a third person and therefore higher risk of some kind of incident that would then effect our rates for potentially years to come.

I was hoping there’s any way we could get an unrelated insurance just for him and this car, to protect us?

Any advice or ideas on how to solve this or put my mind at ease are greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Can our friend get a separate insurance for our car? Or how else to be safe?

    1. You’re on the hook no matter what when your friend drives your car. Your friend is also for that matter, but that doesn’t limit your exposure. Best thing you can do is add your friend to your policy and have him pay the additional premium. He may be able to obtain a separate policy but that won’t be cheaper.

    2. This is a bad plan all the way around. I am not directly answering your question; I am just raising an issue I hope you have considered.

If your name is on the title of the vehicle, you could be held responsible for any damages caused by that vehicle. For instance, if there are damages over and above the car’s policy limits, you can be held responsible even though your friend was driving.
