My husband has been in the National Guard for twelve years. He has been paid wrong for the last eight years and we keep getting the run around. HELP.

My husband joined the NG in 2012. The "Single No Dependents" status should have changed in 2016. He has turned his documentation into his unit more times than he can count and keeps getting told it's "fixed" and to wait on his backpay. A year ago was the last time he was told it was fixed and was told to wait it out.

He just received his AT orders yesterday and the orders STILL show single with no dependents which means it has not been fixed. He has a brand new Admin NCO at his unit that he emailed and explained the urgency, but at this point it sounds like a lost cause. I want to give this guy the chance to fix it but we truly don't know what else to do if he doesn't fix it.

What does he do?! How do we get this fixed?! I don't even have any idea how much he is owed but since it has been accumulating for eight years I am assuming its quite a bit. He has brought it up time and time again and keeps getting told it has been fixed when clearly it is not. Everyone is entered into DEERS correctly if that matters.

His contract is up at the end of the year and at this point he is seriously considering not reenlisting because it is issue after issue and nothing seems to be getting resolved.

    1. Why would he keep trying to resolve this at the unit level? He needs to go to the finance office on his installation, this isn’t something the unit can fix. Elevate the problem instead of going thru the same admin office in his unit

Where is his command chain on all this? Heck after 8 years why hasn’t he written his congressman or senators?

Contact your states USPFO. DM me your state and I can help find contact info.

Alternatively, a congressional or gubernatorial inquiry usually works pretty well too

    4. Give your congressman or senator a call. Stuff happens quick when they call on your behalf.

    5. It “should” be an easy fix in the personnel system that would then flow and update the pay system if all the supporting documents are on file.

Retro pay will need to be manually done and doing an audit for going that far back is time consuming. A lot of the data has been archived and funding has expired. Assuming your husband has the paper trail to prove he provided everything timely he can make a strong case for back pay.

Now dependent status really only matters for active duty orders such as AT or any other period they actually cut orders. If all he ever did was drill weekends and annual training the back pay for even 8 years won’t be much. Think like $2000-$3000 maybe. Now if he did any long tours, extended schools, deployments, that’s another story. The back pay could be much more.

If he is coming up for reenlistment he could give the unit one more chance to make it right before reaching out to someone much higher. Retention is a big thing and losing someone with over a decade worth of knowledge over some BAH would be a shame.
