Suez Canal Journey – Suez Canal Defense Monument and the People of Egypt

The Suez Canal Defense Monument, located near Ismailia, Egypt, commemorates the defense of the Suez Canal during World War I. Designed by French sculptor Raymond Delamarre and architect Michel Roux-Spitz, the monument was completed in 1930.

It features two large statues of winged angels, symbolizing “Serene Intelligence” and “Severe Force,” made from Sardinian rose granite. These statues stand at the base of two 40-meter-high pylons, representing the canal itself. The monument honors the British, Egyptian, French, and Italian forces that repelled the Turkish army’s attack on the canal in 1915.
