Should I buy a beat-up car to use and sell it when I leave for my next station?

Hi – Currently in RI for the next 6 months and public transport here kinda sucks. I'm contemplating buying a beat-up car (under $5000) to use for the next 6 months and then sell it to cars.com or some similar place when I'm about to leave. Thought I should reach out to y'all for some sanity check here if that's the right thing to do and if so, what are some places I should look into (facebook market place, local dealership, etc).
