One half of a mil-to-mil family here, I travel frequently for my job, spouse does not. We have had the Chase Sapphire Reserve (in my name, with her as a card user) since I started traveling frequently back in 2015. At the time, Chase didn't offer the fee waiver for active duty military types, but the benefits were good enough for me to just pay it (I always used the travel credit basically immediately). Fast forward to 2022, and I learned that Chase waives the annual fee (and the additional card user fee) for active duty military members – which would save me $625/year.

I called Chase to ask to have this benefit applied to my account. They told me, repeatedly, and forcefully, that since my account had been open since 2015, I was not eligible for the benefit. I need to have opened my account after 2017. I was…vexed by this…but they told me my only option was to cancel my card and re-apply later.

In 2023, I finally got off my a** and also go the AMEX Platinum, which obviously waived the annual fee. But, AMEX point benefits are significantly less advantageous to me than the Chase points are – I use Southwest to fly my parents and in-laws to our house for child care purposes…fairly frequently (in line with my travel schedule). I use the AMEX for benefits like the Centurion lounges, but don't generally use it for our everyday purchases.

My question is, does anyone know a way to have the fee waiver applied to my CSR, or should I just bite the bullet, cancel it (which will be a giant pain, since it's our payment method for lord knows how many things), switch over to the AMEX for a month or so, then re-apply for the CSR and get the annual fee waiver (and maybe get the point bonus again?).

Thanks for whatever help you all can give me!

    1. Don’t cancel. Downgrade to one of the freedoms, apply to the CSR and get the bonus again with the the fee waived.

Do you think it might be helpful to visit a chase bank? go in person and see if anyone can hep get the waiver? I know it’s probably going to be a no but, it’s not for sure a no if someone who works there is willing to help or at least try.
