When I joined the military last year, I went on military leave of absence. My company still considers me an active employee for the first 90 days after I go on leave (which was early October). I was also still enrolled in the company HDHP (too early in the year to decline coverage), and every year on Jan 1, they make a contribution to our HSAs. Of course, with the military, immediately upon joining, you're enrolled into Tricare which is not an HDHP and therefore does not allow me to make HSA contributions.

How do I reconcile this for taxes next year? Will I have to withdraw it and pay taxes on it (because of a wrongful contribution)? It technically is an excess contribution since, again, I'm not eligible to contribute, but articles dealing with those only talk about when you go above your limit.
