Apologies if this question has been asked – I’ve seen it alluded to, but not addressed as straightforwardly as I would like (given the result if I am wrong).

I have 15 years total military service split between AD, reserves, and Guard. I also have 10 years as a federal employee under the FERS system. I am (finally) looking to buy back my AD military time for FERS service credit, but would like to confirm that this will not affect my reserve retirement date?

My understanding is that while you have to waive an active duty military retirement, buying back active duty time for a civil service job does not affect my ability to use those same five years of active service towards my reserve retirement. Can anyone confirm this? My HR folks are a bit confused and hedging their responses on both the military and GS side of the house…

    1. You are correct. You don’t lose anything military related. You will retire at your normal reserve/guard time without losing any money and your FERS money will get the benefit of your AD time. One of the best perks of being a fed.

I just went through this myself a few months ago. I also have an old coworker who was in your situation and just retired military and FERS and is collecting everything you discussed in your post without issues or “losing” any retirement money.
