A friend backed in to me. Will I need to involve my insurance?

Truth be told, I'm rolling around without insurance. I kick myself every day I don't do something about it and now here we are. My friend backed in to me and busted my quarter panel. He's totally willing to own up to it and sent me his insurance but my question is, even if I had insurance, would I need to even get them involved? I'm hoping this is just a straight claim on his insurance and the fact that I have none won't even come in to play. My only other fear is that his insurance totals my car and that will really upset me if I have a salvaged title because someone else hurt my car. Thanks anyone in advance.
