You have a duty to maintain a proper following distance. You may be not be 100% liable for the two cars that already made impact, but you’re at least partially liable for their rear end damage and every one’s else’s.

Another question is, if the police don’t find the 2 cars that took off, does that “break the chain” and keep us from being taken for everything we own by the 2 up front that actually caused the whole thing.

      1. The weather won’t matter, as there is also a duty to drive according to conditions
      2. I find it extremely odd that not one, but two separate vehicles left the scene and only your husband stayed
      3. Sometimes the damages to your car can seem minor and cause much more damage to the others. I’m not saying this is 100% the case only that it’s possible.
      4. Did other drivers confirm the vehicles that drove off? How many impacts did they feel?
      5. Let your insurance handle this it’s why you have it. They will investigate. If you don’t have enough limits (reading between the lines sounds like that’s the case) your insurance company won’t pay a dime until they get releases for your liability. This is almost always the case.
      6. Always your option to get an attorney, if you’re sued your insurance co will pay.
