My 20 year old daughter just got her license and my father is gifting her his 2009 Honda. We live in NYC and haven’t owned a car in decades, though my husband and I have clean driving records. She will be taking the car to Albany, NY for college. We are looking for the least expensive option for car insurance.

A Geico rep said to register the car in NYC under her name, but get the insurance under her name with Albany as the primary residence.

But I have been told by others that the cheapest thing would be to get the insurance under my husband’s name with her as an additional driver. My husband is worried they will somehow find out the car is mainly in Albany and that she is the primary driver and they may not cover accidents if they do.

Any advice on the best and least expensive way to register and insure the car would be greatly appreciated.

The way insurance is written in NY is complicated. If the car is registered to your daughter, the insurance must be in her name no exceptions. If the car is registered in your husband’s name, you can add the car to your policy (she should already be a rated driver on your policy as a licensed driver), and she would be updated to the primary driver with a rated location change to the Albany address. Don’t listen to people who aren’t licensed agents, it won’t help you in almost any circumstance. Your husband is correct, misrepresenting or withholding facts can result in a claim denial. No one can tell you what will be best and cheapest, you’ll have to get quotes, too many underwriting differences from person to person to tell you that. There’s no specific company that will be the last expensive. Find a local agent who can shop multiple companies.
