We just recently moved to Hawaii and I am about to start a job as a GS. My spouse is active duty and we are stationed here.
My new job sent me the Hawaii state tax form, and I asked for Virginia tax form since that is my state of residence. They basically said they only do Hawaii and that I need to figure it out myself. I know that I can claim non-resident not to have Hawaii state taxes withheld, but how do I get my Virginia taxes withheld from my pay? I was living in Arizona and made the mistake of having Arizona taxes withheld instead of going the non-resident route. It made our taxes super complicated, and we had to pay someone to fix our taxes.

I would really like to avoid that and make sure my income in taxed by the correct state.

Any advice would be super appreciated.

    1. They don’t have to withhold for a different state for you. If they won’t, you may need to make quarterly estimated payments.

    2. If you’re not married to a mil member you’re a Hawaii resident now. Congratulations

Here is your step by step.
Step 1 spouse file to with employer to stop withholdings.

How do I claim exemption from Hawaii withholdings? A nonresident spouse whose salary, wages, tips, or other compensation is exempt from Hawaii income tax under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA) may claim an exemption from Hawaii income tax withholding by filing the following forms with his or her employer:
      HW-4
      HW-6
Copy of the service member’s military orders Copy of Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)
      Valid military spouse ID card

This is the steps to follow to avoid HI withholding otherwise you have to paper file a N-15 to get those withholds from hawaii returned.
