Nationwide has decided not to renew my policy.

I have four drivers and three cars

M 46 no claims in the past ten years

F 46 no claims in the past ten years

    F 16 no claims

    F 18 three claims

    • Feb 1 2023 an uninsured teenager hit her in the school parking lot

    • Feb 19 2023 hit a parked car's door when they opened it as she was pulling into the space, no fault assigned, can't remember the cost here

-Jan 27 2024 hit by driver who fled the scene, car totaled, 13k pay out

We have 3 cars, all paid off:

    2018 Nissan Leaf

    2018 Honda CRV

    2011 Honda CRV (F18 primary)

Our broker basically said no one would take us unless we take 18f off our policy and put her on her own Direct Auto policy. Quote for absolutely the bare minimum was $300 for her.

She is currently at college and drives maybe once a week. I'm freaking out about the whole situation.

I believe the parking lot was probably her fault, but how do I move forward? Should I take her car and if so how long does it take for her to be less of a liability? Is it a mistake to have a gap in her coverage?

I have until 9/30 to figure this out, I'm at a loss.

Find a new agent. This shouldn’t be a hard problem to solve for you. But with that many claims in such a short period of time, yeah she’s going to be expensive to insure.

You might hear people pitch the option of excluding her. Think VERY carefully about this because what it means is that any policy she is excluded on, there is NO coverage. Period. No exceptions. So no “she was only using it for an emergency!” situation. Invariably with family it winds up happening where they borrow a car for some reason 2 yrs from now and everyone forgot about the exclusion and…oh shit no coverage. We see posts here constantly about this.

Three claims. Don’t let her have a gap in coverage. $300 a month all considering is not actually bad.

Make her get a part time job and make her pay for it herself. That will teach her to be responsible for mistakes and she will be more careful.

    3. I would definitely talk to a second agent, but 300/month for an 18 year old with 3 different items on their history sounds about right.
