yesterday an uninsured driver ran a stop sign and totaled my car. turns out he doesn't have insurance. my car is worth around 20k. I also had to go to the hospital for a broken thumb and sprained neck and knee. Does anyone know what will happen with all of the insurance stuff? Am I just screwed? This happened in ALABAMA

    1. Call you insurance company. They’ll tell you what will happen. We don’t know if you have collision, unins motorist, rental, med pay, etc.

File a claim with your insurance company. If you have collision coverage your company will fix your car, less deductible. If you have uninsured motorist coverage, it will help with your medical bills.

I guess you will have to file a claim with your insurance and work they way through the process. Are you screwed, I guess it depends on the coverages you have selected and the limits you have chosen.

    4. Hopefully you have both collision coverage (to pay for your car, minus your deductible) and uninsured motorist coverage (to pay for your injuries/medical bills). You may have some PIP or med pay available in your policy too – you’ll need to read it and see what you have and if it applies.

It you don’t have collision or uninsured motorists coverage, you’re mostly out of luck. You can sue the uninsured driver, but if he doesn’t have insurance, I’m guessing he doesn’t have much in the way of assets either.

Great reminder for everyone to check their coverage, lotsa folks out there with no or inadequate insurance.

    6. If you have collision coverage with your own insurance, I would suggest filing a claim through your own insurance. The medical will depend on whether you have medical coverage on your policy. If you don’t then you’ll have to take it up with your health insurance or pursue them directly if you don’t have any medical insurance or coverage.
