For context SIL is 17 and wants to get her license but obviously needs insurance. She lives with my wife and I and is asking to be put on as an occasional driver. We don't want the risk of her on our policy, but do need her to get her license to free us up. Her father passed many years ago and her mother doesn't have a license/insurance. Aside from her waiting till she's 18 for her own policy is there any other options?

    1. She lives with you. She is a risk. Your contract with your insurer requires you to disclose any licensed household residents. She will need to be added to your policy. If she gets her own car and insurance, your company MIGHT agree to list her as having other insurance and not rate her on your policy, but that’s at their discretion.

I’m pretty confident the contract with your insurer requires she be on the policy when she gets a license, as most do. As soon as she gets the license, she can be added to the policy without your permission by your insurer through something called driver discovery. If you want to be “freed” up, you’ll have to add her to your policy, if you don’t want your policy to go up, don’t allow her to get a drivers license. There’s no way around this
