Elderly mother fell at my home while visiting us in California in February and needed surgery and hospitalization. It was her fault – she missed a step.

Now her travel medical insurer (she's Canadian) has sent me a letter asking for my insurance info to see if I have non liability medical on my home policy. Spoke to our broker and he said to basically ignore it – we do have non liability medical on our home policy but he doesn't think the carrier would pay it. I'm unsure if that's good advice to ignore the letter?

    1. Medical payments pay regardless of fault.. it’s called a “good neighbor coverage” by some agents.

Ignoring it won’t make it go away.

Your agent is really doing you a disservice here.

Turn it in to your insurance and let them handle it.

    2. Her travel insurance is almost definitely secondary to any other insurance that may cover her bills. Ignoring this is a dumb idea and could cause her headaches with getting her hospital bills paid. Your policy almost definitely has a medical payment amount on it that covers injuries to guests even without liability. Provide your insurance to the other company and let them figure it out.
