My home caught fire a while back and I had renters insurance with state farm. they paid for my family’s hotel stay for a few weeks and reimbursed us for food and transportation. sent us a few checks for furniture and items that got lost in the fire. then we got cut and said that we reached our limit and that we couldn’t get any more money and that they couldn’t pay for our hotel stay anymore.

fast forward months later, i get a call from a state farm representative saying i have over $11k leftover in budget money from our claim. has anyone had this happen to them? did they cut you a check? how did you claim your money?

You’ll want to ask them what coverage has remaining limits left. Your belongings and your hotel stay are covered under separate parts of the policy with different limits.

If it’s additional living expenses coverage, find out if you can get reimbursed for anything you weren’t, like longer time in the hotel, food, etc.

If it’s contents coverage, see if there’s more you can submit or if it’s stuff you’ve replaced, see about submitting receipts to get reimbursed the difference in replacement cost.
