So I was just curious if anyone else has ever ran into this issue, because it seemed very odd to me. We have been using the same insurance company for almost a decade. We just purchased a new vehicle (Mazda CX90) and our insurance denied coverage on it (we have clean driving records). I've never experienced anything like this before, and was wondering if it is common practice to deny coverage based entirely on vehicle make and model?

Update: The exact model is a 2024 Mazda CX90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. It is full gas, not a hybrid.

I know a lot of companies recently have been denying coverage for some Hyundais and Kias due to the ease of theft.

    2. what was the reason they gave you for denial?

yes, it is possible they could decline coverage based on the type of vehicle. right now there are many Kias and Hyundais that are considered uninsurable by many major insurance companies due to their increased risk of theft/vandalism. I haven’t heard of any issues with Mazdas but it varies by company. it could also be the vehicle itself, some companies don’t insure vehicles with rebuilt or salvaged titles

As a damage appraiser I just did some quick googling and I don’t see any reason why an insurer wouldn’t want to insure it unless it’s a PHEV and they’re doing a blanket rejection of all PHEVs and electrics. I’ve written damage estimates on some lately.

Some Mazda paint colors are notoriously difficult to match, but IDK if that would be a reason for not wanting to insure them at all.

    4. When I was an agent we couldn’t rate some so new vehicle but had a way of rating them form a sales amount. But each company can be different

I think I know what the issue is. So if it’s a brand new model, which this appears to be from what I looked at on Google, the insurance company doesn’t know how to rate the vehicle. Call them back and ask them to request vehicle symbols for it. It may take some time for them to do it so other option is call other insurance companies.
