Thanks in advance for any help – we have no idea what to do.

My husband is an immigrant from mexico. He has a mexican drivers license and we live in southern califronia. My insurance is through AAA who will not insure him due to not having a california drivers license. We are trying to get his california drivers license but he'll need to practice a bit and also be insured during the behind the wheel test.

Since we live together my insurance wont cover him. We've found other companies who will insure him without a license but they said I would have to cancel my insurance and we both switch to them, and that having two policies would be fraud. I have been with my insurance for years and would like to stay.

Is there any way to get him 30 or 60 days of liability or something so that he can legally drive the car a few times and then take the test to get a CA license, then we can insure him normally on my insurance?

Does anyone know a company who would do something like that?

Insuring my immigrant husband on my car but with a separate policy? (In California BTW)

Probably not . You’re not going to find any insurers willing to cover only one spouse.

for a few reasons, including the fact that he is already considered an insured on your policy as a spouse (and thus you being considered an insured on any policy he purchases) and him having regular access to the vehicle, no

if he only has a driving permit though, it’s not likely that he needs to be listed and rated on the policy; generally speaking, he only needs to be added once he passes the test and is licensed to drive

you should double check with aaa about that

    3. I would speak to an agent.
I do know there are some nonstandard carriers who would, if you’re excluded off of his policy.

    4. It’s not illegal to have two policies. I’d get a separate policy with you and him on there, then cancel and put on your aaa policy when he gets his ca license

    5. So the issue is that him having liability won’t cover your car. I think I understand their misunderstanding…
You would need to insure yourself with your car with the non standard company while he is unlicensed.
Technically because you are married in the same household, he does need to be listed as an excluded driver with AAA for now. Which would mean that him having his own liability insurance will not cover your car. (I sounded confusing for me too).

Alternatively, a non owners policy. It provides liability while he drives any non household cars. So if you have a friend who doesn’t live with you, he would have coverage extended to their cars.

You are running into a couple of issues. First unless your husband is on the title of the car he has to have insurable interest in the vehicle which to a lot of companies is ownership. You are the one who has the interest so you would be the first named insured while he would be a second. Also lots of insurance companies take a foreign license but with a surcharge since the driving record is unverifiable. Also insurance companies want all household members listed so everything can be appropriately rated. Best thing for you to do is find a local agent to find a company for you and your husband.
