    • car will be financed

i understand my age and gender, but $400 / month for a financed tesla model 3 performance awd seems a bit steep for full coverage? i was quoted $1200 / month by another insurer. statefarm quotes me at $250 / month if i stay under my moms insurance with all of her discounts and whatnot? keep looking or is this the reality for young males with otherwise good records?

    • edit ; to clarify i have not purchased the car. i'm still driving my older car. just gathering some info on a prospective purchase.

insurance quotes throwing me off. is being a 24 year old male just that shitty?

    1. You’re lucky to find coverage for a tesla at all, companies are starting to drop them because they are a nightmare to fix. Add on top of that being an under 25 male and you have the perfect recipe for crazy rates

Every Tesla that I have insured that has been in an accident has been considered a total loss.

I looked at Tesla for insurance it was $3200 just for the Tesla alone and I’m 34

maybe don’t get a tesla then?

with your accountancy background you surely know that prudent financial decisions are made AFTER getting relevant information. e.g., what does a prius cost to insure? or a bz4x?

    6. Yeah the Tesla is not helping you here. They are very expensive to repair and total fairly easily.

    7. Tesla or any electric car costs more because they’re more expensive to fix and not every mechanic can work on it.

Never buy a car without knowing the insurance cost first. Sorry you had to learn the hard way. Don’t screw yourself over by getting the lowest coverage/high deductible plan either. If you can’t afford the insurance, you can’t afford the car. Good luck.

    9. Under 24 male with a car that can hit 60 in under 3 seconds. Yeah, good luck with that.

    10. The problem is that it’s a piece of shit Tesla. Nobody wants to insure them bc they are dangerous and expensive to fix

Maybe don’t get a new car from a company that makes cars notably expensive to fix and that’ll void your warranty if you don’t take it to the right auto shop

      Lemme guess – USAA?

      $1200/m – it’s not a Ferrari!

For (not so good) comparison sake, I had usaa quote $500/month for my 17 yo son for a 2002 GMC Sonoma.

Been with them near 20 years and had to leave. Went with Progressive.

    13. You’re 24 and pricing out the performance version of the Model 3. The magic age where insurance rates start to go down is 25. And I guarantee you the non-performance version will be half as much to insure.

That said, as a prior owner of a Model 3 Performance, it’s a pretty sweet car. I’d stick on your mom’s insurance for the discounts for at least a year and shop again when you’re 25.
