Long story short, my husband and I are the owners of a Kia. It was stolen. We are located in New York State, not city.

I was woken at 1 AM by a sheriff's deputy at our door. They found the stolen car not even a mile away down the road before we even knew it was missing. It was in the driveway when I went to bed. They literally stole the vehicle, drove it for a minute or two and then dumped it. A couple thousand in damages minimum for 120 seconds of thrill. Thanks.

The steering column is obviously destroyed. They also ripped off the driver door handle to make entry, I assume. A scratch on the front fender that MIGHT buff out. A couple things missing, but we at least never keep anything valuable in the vehicle. A carseat was in there that I no longer trust even with only a small scrape on the vehicle.

I filed a claim online and I'm getting a pop up below the claim number stating "total loss predicted." The kia has a KBB value of 13k and we still owe 11k. Comprehensive coverage but a painful deductible of $1000. We were able to drive it home with a phone charger in lieu of a key because the key turn is dangling by a few wires now. 🥴 No gap insurance, unfortunately.

    My questions:
    1. Any advice in general? because I have no clue what I'm doing. I filed a claim with basic multiple choice answers and will be uploading pics when the sun comes up.
    2. Do unwrecked stolen cars get totalled that easily or was the prediction way off? (And I think i WANT it to be totaled to get it out of our hair. Is that a crazy thing to wish?)
    3. Does insurance care about the smaller missing things? So far we have noticed maybe $50 worth with a couple sentimental trinkets but we only looked for a minute and are waiting until morning to full inventory and insurance pictures. Obviously the higher dollar stuff like the carseat are being put on the claim.
    4. If they don't total it, do they offer to cover adding immobilizers with the repairs?
    5. If they do total it and lowball, is there a way to negotiate the payout? I'm scared they'll only offer 8k like car dealerships were when we tried to trade it away.

Glad I pay for the best insurance I can afford for knuckleheads to financially destroy us for 2 minutes of fun. 🥲
