My new (used) car as of two days ago was just side swiped by a U-Haul. The driver stopped and left a note and we have connected with him. He claims he didn’t take out insurance with U-Haul if he hit a car (only damage to the U-Haul itself). He asked if I was comfortable saying that he hit our car in his personal vehicle which we are not, as that’s insurance fraud. But apparently his insurance doesn’t cover uhauls.
Any idea what to do from here? It seems like it’s going in circles and to be honest I don’t know what to do.

    Hit by U-Haul, help!

    1. WhereMyMidgeeAt on

      Your options are limited :

you can use your collision coverage (if you have it), cover your deductible and have your insurance pay the rest

      Or

You can ask him to pay for your damage out of his pocket

      Or

If you don’t carry collision/ physical damage coverage you can pay out of pocket for your damages

His policy won’t cover a commercial vehicle and he didn’t purchase coverage for damages he caused.

    2. Have you spoken with his insurance? If not, I would make sure a claim is filed so that they can confirm that there is no coverage.

If you have uninsured coverage for property damage, you will need a coverage denial from his insurance to use it.

If you have collision coverage, you can use that now and pay your deductible.

    3. The U-haul company was minimum liability insurance coverage on all of their vehicles. Call 1-800-GO-UHAUL and ask for their insurance department phone number.
