Hello all,

Unique situation (at least for me). After being discharged from the USCG in 2016 I have, unbeknownst to me, continued to be listed in the IRR since that time. I was separated early before the end of my contract (honorably) so assumed that was the end of things, including being put into the IRR. My unit did not have me attend a Taps class, so I was left with little information at the time of discharge.

Fast forward to now – I just swore into the ANG last month. I checked in this past week to see my status in terms of being “gained” into the system/unit, as I was told I’d start drilling by October. I was informed that it’s taking them longer to do this because I am still listed in the IRR – which was a surprise to both them and I. None of this came up during the enlistment process this time around, and even if I had done my 4 year contract / 4 year IRR (as stipulated in my USCG contract) the IRR aspect would have ended in 2021.

So, my financial question to all of this is, is there any benefit to the fact I’ve been in the IRR since 2016 until now as I re-enlist?

From what I’ve read it has no benefit on years toward retirement, but perhaps financial benefits in terms of my pay due to it adding additional years of service/time in grade/ – something like that? Apologies, probably not the right terminology.

    Thank you!

IRR is inactive service which means you don’t get any pay or benefits from it.

That said, the 8 year MSO (military service obligation) is exactly that. Everyone who joins for the first time gets it, and it’s most often served as 4 years active / 4 years inactive. It applies per person, not per enlistment or anything….so as you’ve already completed it, you wouldn’t have another 8 year MSO if rejoining later. Or at least that’s my understanding of it.

As for why you weren’t removed in 2021, maybe someone slipped up and fatfingered your time in service or something?
