I’m a little confused about retirement with military when it comes to active duty and reserves.

I did 8 years marine reserves, then I joined active army in 2020. I’m at 6 years active after army computed my time. I am doing green to gold currently and will acquire a 3 year officer commitment. I understand officer retirement, you would have to serve min 10 years to rate that retirement.

I am trying to plan my career as an officer. I also plan on going to GS after military time.

My question is, what is the reserve retirement when it comes to active and reserve points? Would I be able to retire as an officer in the reserves without 10 year minimum? Is it possible to do GS while serving in reserves? My goal is to do US Marshall.

    1. So the basics:

If you want an AD retirement, you need 20 years of AD service (Reserve time while on AD orders + any true AD time). You need 10 years to retire as an O.

If you want a reserve retirement, you need 20 good years. Your pay will be determined based on the number of points you have divided by 360. You do not need 10 years as an O.

Yes, you can do GS and reserves.
