So I’m currently deployed in the usmc & heading back to the states in November but I’m married & just been saving up my paychecks & BAH but have been wondering if I should rent or buy a home using va loan in Cali (near fallbrook area) I was looking at modular homes for around 160000 & I was going to buy but i wasn’t sure if va loan would let me due to it being in community but I guess what I’m going for here is should I buy a home I don’t plan on staying in Cali but assuming the house appreciated in value i would sell for profit before I get out (I get out in three years & I’m currently E-3) thanks in advanced!!

I would be willing to bet you would lose a sizable amount of money if you bought in Cali for 3 years. When you buy, you have a ton of sunk cost in the form of realtor fees, inspection, maintenance, etc. even if it appreciates, there’s still costs associated with selling it again.

Most answers here are “it depends on x and y”, but in this case it’s a clean decision that you should rent
