Me 38m son 17m right now I'm paying progressive about $800 for 6 months and just received a renewal they want to raise it to over 1k on a mid teen Pathfinder and a late 90s Camaro no accidents claims or tickets ever. When I shopped around to add my son who just got his license everywhere I look is damn near $500 a month all major carriers. 3k for six months just seems absolutely crazy to me.

    Edit

I totally understand a new male drivers liability to the company but quadruple? Fuck me

I shopped around progressive geico travelers Allstate AAA all pretty much 500

Both are my cars I was hoping he could just drive the Pathfinder since it's safer for him

I also quoted him on a 06 Honda Accord 100/300 my brother wants to get rid of and the quote was still pretty much 500 $479 more exactly

    New jersey

I might just make him get one of those electric scooters

I had no idea my son would cause my insurance to quadruple

    1. Shop around. If they’re all coming in at a certain price, then that’s the market rate currently

Kids are expensive drivers. They cause accidents all the time. They think your kid has a high risk of costing them much more than $3k in the next six months

    2. 1 is a tank that can cause a lot of damage and injuries, and the other is a “sports car”. Not great vehicles for a 17 year old dude from an insurance perspective.

You must’ve been living under a rock to not know that having a new driver on your policy would dramatically impact your rates. They are high-risk. My grandson, after he got his license, totaled two cars within a week of each other. It’s always been that way.

Yup, I added my son recently and it went up by about 1200 every 6 months. Now when it renewed this last time, they added another 500 on top of that

    5. Teenage girls back into the mailbox or scrape a fender on the way into the garage. Teenage boys wrap the car around a tree or run a red light and t-bone a family of four.

      >Camaro

Those 2 right there is all they need to see. Drop the camaro. Even if he doesn’t drive it, he’s on your policy as a driver for both cars. Coverage for new drivers will make rates go up and coverage for a sports car is usually high. Coverage for a new driver with a sports car on the policy your insurance assumes he has access to it whenever he wants

I got rear ended at a high rate of speed by a 20 year old male driver. So, it’s true that young drivers will cause the policy to skyrocket due to the inherent risk

Don’t get the gadget that monitors driving habits if you have a teen driver. My neighbor had her insurance policy cancelled. She is being quoted over $5000 for 6 months

      (1) Yeah, it sucks, but when I got my license, Mom and Dad’s insurance doubled. (circa 1967) It was $90.00 every six months and jumped to $182 every six months.

      (2) When I bought a car while in the military in 1971 it cost me $360.00 every six months. ($2800 every six months in today’s dollars)

      (3) When I turned 25, my premiums dropped about 15%. When I married, the premiums dropped about 40%.

      (4) Yeah, it is absolutely crazy, but it is the system that seems to work.

    10. older car, specifically a camaro plus a teenager. the type of car always plays a factor, but insurance rates for new drivers don’t start to decrease (as long as they have a continuous clean driving record) until they’re hitting about 25. they have some of the highest numbers of accidents & are considered a liability, therefore, higher premiums.

    11. He’s a teen driver, unfortunately yes your rates are going to skyrocket.

Do you have an extra junk vehicle? Buy a shitty junk car, put liability only on it, and ask your agent to rate your teen on that vehicle.
And also ask if your teen qualifies for any new driver discounts, safety course discounts, or good student discounts.

There are plenty of ways to help you reduce that cost you should speak to your agent.

A 17 year old male is a high risk in the world of insurance. Add a Camaro to the equation and it doesn’t get any better.

I was paying the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $418/mo in Connecticut for just myself with a Mustang and a clean driving record at age 21… *30 years ago*.

NJ is a more densely populated state than CT and you have yourself and another vehicle on the policy, so I’m thinking $500/mo is probably about right.

All you can really do is shop around though.

I also have a teenager. My rates tripled. That is the risk they present. And if you feel otherwise, you’re super naive to teens.

    15. It’s always higher rates for teens, even more so for guys. But if you can get him on your insurance, it will help him in the future.

    16. Expensive-Forever739 on

Insurance is the biggest and most expensive racket going. You’re spending hella money hoping you don’t have to use it and when you do, the premium goes up. And if you stay accident/incident free you get nothing back. Not even a lower premium.

    17. Teen girl across the street has had 3 rear bumper replacements, 2 front bumper replacements and 3 sets of rims. All with an “OMG I don’t know WHERE that curb came from!!!”

I carry comp/collision on all of our vehicles because these same drivers have liability only at state minimums because premiums are expensive and I’m going to get hit. By the way, I’ve got an 18m and 16f both driving so yes I’ve had that double rate increase twice. Still wouldn’t reduce the cost until they’re more experienced.

    18. One of the first things my son did as a licensed driver was to back my car into my daughter’s car in my driveway. There’s no good reason for it, except he was 17.

    19. SingleRelationship25 on

I had this issue with my daughter. I ended up getting a separate policy from a different company with just her car on it and myself and her as the driver. She doesn’t drive my truck or Mustang at all so it didn’t make sense she was on the same policy as them. With all on one policy it was $600 a month. With two policies it was $325.

    20. It’s +$1000 per teenager per month here. In a 4 teenager household. Gender didn’t matter at all in this state.

There was no way I’m footing that bill. Your teen needs to make enough income to pay his part of the bill.

    21. The bad news is that’s about normal. The worst news is it doesn’t matter what you do, they are going to charge that much since he lives in your house and is a minor. They won’t accept a promise that he just won’t drive normally.

    22. The type of car doesn’t make that much of a difference. The real money in claims is for injuries.

    23. My 16 year old son hit a brick wall today while I was teaching him to drive in a parking lot. Lots of damage! 16-19 year olds cause a lot of crashes.

    24. How many drivers in the house? If it’s just you and your son you need to assign him to the pathfinder. I just added my son last year and we have three drivers and I assigned him to his 91 s-10 instead of my or my wife’s car. That lowered the cost some but it still cost almost 2k for a year.

    25. Licensed agent here (I know, I hate me too). Your son is the primary risk, it’s just what’s in the numbers. Older cars (for a lot of providers 10 yrs is pushing old) can also factor into the price for a lot of reasons. Camaro is also a lil spicy cuz Camaro, amiright. Like others have said, if you’ve done multiple quotes then it just be like that and maybe kiddo pays his share. Also, ask about group discounts, alumni, driver training discounts, winter tires, student etc. some discounts can’t be offered but if they’re mentioned it can be looked at to see if it qualifies. God speed.

    26. I know it’s insane! My husband and I just added his daughter (18 y/o) to our policy. Three cars with three drivers costs us 500$/month. We used to pay 260$.

    27. If it’s within your budget, try running a few quotes with a slightly newer car, late teens, since these tend to have safety features such as forward collision warning. It might be cheaper in the long run.
