I'll keep it very short and simple, got hit back in May, total loss, multiple vehicles involved. The at-fault's policy (Geico) had limits issues so I went through my own (Progressive). I paid my $1k deductible and my insurance paid out to me $29k to go find a new car. The 2 carriers have seem to have finally finished negotiations and I got a notice that Geico paid my insurance $20k.

I already know and I understand there is zero guarantee I get my deductible back. My question is whether it is common for major carriers like Progressive to pay back a $1k deductible to me and take a $10k loss instead of a $9k loss essentially?

Some states they pay you pack first. Some states you get a proportional share of the total settlement back. So if your total claim was actually 30k less the 1k deductible and your insurer recovered 20k you can expect to see 2/3 of your deductible back. But don’t know without knowing what state.

    2. Many insurance companies refund the deductible off the top of whatever they collect.

You have to ask the Progressive reps how that works.

I found the following on Progressive’s website.

      >If another person is found to be at fault for the accident, we’ll work with you to make sure either they or their insurance company pays for your damages and losses and recover any money you may have paid toward your deductible or repairs. We can’t promise that we’ll always be able to recover your deductible from the other insurance company or driver, but we’ll do our best to make it happen. If there is shared responsibility, the amount you receive back may be prorated.

You might get a better answer if you ask about your claim in particular.
