I'm trying to understand the cover I need as a foreign driver in the US. I am driving from North Carolina to Tennessee in a hire car over 8 days. For an SUV with 2 drivers we're looking at $283.85 LDW and $140.86 SLI up to $1m coverage.

I want to get the best deal possible so if anyone could let me know any cheaper alternatives other than buying directly from insurer that would be much appreciated.

My biggest concern, however, is coverage. $1m liability seems so low. If we had an at fault accident it wouldn't be out of the question that liability could be 50x that. Are there any options for foreign drivers in hire cars to have higher liability limits or should we just accept that that's the only level of cover we can buy?

    Any input appreciated!

    1. $1M ($1,000,000) in the US is more liability coverage than a VAST majority of local drivers carry. You’ll be fine. LDW/CDW+Liability is what you need.

Many drivers are going around with $50,000 bodily injury and $25,000 property damage coverage, some people are driving around with much less.
